AP PHOTOS: Skydiver's supersonic, 24-mile jump

Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner became the first skydiver to break the speed of sound in a 24-mile-high jump from a balloon on Sunday, reaching 833.9 mph in a free fall that lasted some 9 minutes.

Landing on his feet in the New Mexico desert, the man known as "Fearless Felix" lifted his arms in victory to the cheers of onlookers and friends.

"When I was standing there on top of the world, you become so humble, you do not think about breaking records anymore, you do not think about gaining scientific data," he said after the jump. "The only thing you want is to come back alive."

"Sometimes we have to get really high to see how small we are," an exuberant Baumgartner told reporters outside mission control after safely returning to Earth.

Here's a gallery of photos from Baumgartner's leap into the record books.

Chicago schools chief out after run-ins with Mayor Rahm Emanuel

Chicago schools chief Jean-Claude Brizard, recruited just 17 months ago by Rahm Emanuel, is stepping down nearly four weeks after the teachers strike. He reportedly infuriated the mayor.

By Mark Guarino,?Staff writer / October 12, 2012

Nearly four weeks since the end of the first teachers strike in 25 years, and 17 months after being recruited from Rochester, N.Y., by Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel in May 2011, Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard is stepping down.

Mr. Brizard?s resignation, announced in a statement released early Friday, highlights the difficulties school administrators face in the Chicago system, where school officials are more directly answerable to City Hall and vulnerable to the political pressures on the mayor.

Unlike previous administrators of what is the nation?s third largest public school system, Brizard was touted as an educator first and a business administrator second. His battle scars earned by dealing with a teachers union in his previous job showed Mayor Emanuel that Brizard had similar mettle for dealing with contentious labor issues in Chicago.

Brizard also believed in many of the reforms Emanuel wanted to implement, such as pushing forward more charter schools, closing underperforming schools, and establishing pay grades based on teacher performance and not seniority.

But Brizard was largely absent from view during last month?s strike, a combative standoff that left Emanuel vulnerable to criticism by voices on both the political right and left. Brizard reportedly infuriated Emanuel by taking a vacation in the days leading up to the strike, and his absence from the public eye during negotiations raised questions among Chicago Public Schools (CPS) employees whether he had resigned. That led Brizard to send an e-mail to staff denying the rumor.

In an interview with the Chicago Tribune Friday, Brizard suggested that his management style did not fit well with City Hall. ?I call it a marriage that was perhaps imperfect. My style and personality is maybe not what the mayor wants. I have felt he is not comfortable with me,? he said.

Media accounts suggest Emanuel was critical of Brizard?s management decisions involving key hires within the system, and as mounting news stories made that displeasure public, it became clear Brizard was a liability.

?The questions about J.C. became a distraction from what we had to do. We had a mutual agreement [that the distraction was] not helpful.? It kept on becoming about the static and noise about J.C. He said, ?Look, getting the schools right is more important than me,? ? the mayor told the Chicago Sun-Times Friday.

Casino Night returns this Oct.

News ? By Paul Goudarzi-Fry on October 12, 2012 7:00 AM

The Resident Student Association will be hosting the annual Casino Night event on Saturday, Oct. 20. The event will be available to all students and staff on campus, and will last from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in Marshall Hall in the S.U.B.

Casino Night is partly a fundraiser for different parts of Puget Sound. While there is no entry fee to the event, the RSA has stated that a $5 donation is suggested at the door. This money will go toward the RSA Programming Fund, used to financially assist other organizations on campus, as well as the residences of students living on campus.

In addition to monetary gifts, local businesses have given donations to be raffled off during the event. Tickets will be sold over the course of the night for $1 apiece.

?[Casino Night] is a night of fun and entertainment for all of those in the Puget Sound community,? RSA President Emma Spalding said.

She said that Casino Night has been gaining momentum over the past six years, despite a lack of motivation from RSA in the early 2000s.

?It?s been a campus thing for a while, and we want to continue it,? Spalding said. ?It?s really a fun event for us to put on.?

This year, RSA is reaching out to a wider group of students by combining two areas of interest. ?We want to mix in the themes of a jazz night and casino night, to make it more interesting and more appealing to the student body, so there?s a variety of interests ? people would come for different reasons to check it out,? Anna Dovzhik said. Dovzhik, the Green Advocate for Sewlangster, is part of the advertising committee for the event, designing posters and images.

?We wanted to open it up to a wider population of the student body,? Spalding agreed. ?We have the regular crowd who enjoys the different casino tables and that sort of gambling atmosphere. However, we wanted to incorporate the dancing aspect so other students can enjoy the night.?

RSA has said that there will be several traditional gambling games at the event, some of which include craps, roulette and blackjack. During the event, student performers will be playing for the attendees and a dance floor. ?Students can swing dance the night away if they would like,? Spalding said.

The event has been described as semi-formal, and students and faculty are encouraged to dress up to attend. RSA is providing refreshments as well, creating an enjoyable event for everyone by making the atmosphere pleasant for all members of the Puget Sound community.

To fully extend that pleasantry to as many students as possible, RSA has made sure to allow everyone access through its voluntary donation policy. At the beginning of the event, all participants are given an equal amount of chips with which to play for the evening. Winning chips allows for a longer playtime, but if all chips have been lost, it is the end of the night unless, as Spalding joked, a friend gives you some of theirs.

?There?s a contest to see ? the top three winners of the evening,? Spalding continued, adding that those three winners will take home the title of being champion players for this year?s event. But in the end, having a ?fun evening? is what counts, allowing participation in Casino Night to convince people to join the event.

RSA strives to bring this event to campus annually, and by participating in these types of activities, students are able to see what can be done with their school. Organizations like the RSA strive to bring out the best in the student body and show how much fun can be had with a little jazz and an atmosphere of games, community and students coming together to enjoy a night of cards.

On Oct. 12-14, 18-21, and 25-28, Raleigh Little Theatre will present a community-theater production of Alfred Hitchcock?s The 39 Steps in its Cantey V. Sutton Theatre. English actor, comedian, and playwright Patrick Barlow adapted this knee-slapping 2005 farce from John Buchan?s classic 1915 adventure novel and Alfred Hitchcock?s edge-of-your-seat 1935 motion-picture thriller based on Buchan?s nail-biting espionage story.

Set in Scotland and London, this madcap stage adaptation of The 39 Steps had its world premiere in June 2005 at West Yorkshire Playhouse in Leeds, England. Revised and redubbed John Buchan?s The 39 Steps, the show had its London premiere, directed by Maria Aitken, on Aug. 10, 2006 at the Tricycle Theatre, and transferred in September 2006 to the Criterion Theatre in London?s West End, where it won the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.

After having its U.S. premiere on Sept. 19, 2007 at Boston University, Alfred Hitchcock?s The 39 Steps made its Broadway debut, also directed by Maria Aitken, on Jan. 15, 2008 at American Airlines Theatre, later transferred to the Cort Theatre and then to the Helen Hayes Theatre, where it played for a combined total of 771 performances before closing on Jan. 10, 2010. The show starred Charles Edwards as Richard Hannay, Jennifer Ferrin as Annabella Schmidt/Pamela/Margaret, Cliff Saunders as Man #1, and Arnie Burton as Man #2, with Man #1 and Man #2 each playing dozens of characters.

Nominated for six 2008 Tony Awards?, including Best Play and Best Direction of a Play, The 39 Steps won Tonys for Best Lighting Design of a Play (Kevin Adams) and Best Sound Design of a Play (Mic Pool), plus a 2008 Drama Desk Award for Unique Theatrical Experience.

After closing on Broadway, The 39 Steps reopened Off-Broadway at the New World Stages Stage I on April 15, 2010, and played there until Jan. 16, 2011.

Long-time Raleigh Little Theatre director Haskell Fitz-Simons will stage Alfred Hitchcock?s The 39 Steps with an all-star cast that includes Jesse R. Gephart as Richard Hannay; Staci Sabarsky as Annabella Schmidt, Margaret, and Pamela; and Tony Hefner and Del Flack as the Clowns who impersonate all the other characters that Hannay encounters during his attempt to expose an espionage ring. (Gephart played one of the Clowns in Hot Summer Nights at the Kennedy?s fabulous 2011 Triangle premiere presentation of this veritable laff riot.)

Raleigh Little Theatre presents ALFRED HITCHCOCK?S THE 39 STEPS at 8 p.m. Oct. 12 and 13, 3 p.m. Oct. 13, 8 p.m. Oct. 18-20, 3 p.m. Oct. 21, 8 p.m. Oct. 25-27, and 3 p.m. Oct. 28 in the Cantey V. Sutton Main Stage Theatre, 301 Pogue St., Raleigh, North Carolina 27607.

Israel PM Netanyahu denies agreeing to Golan pullout for peace

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu denied a newspaper report on Friday that said he had agreed in principle to hand back land annexed from Syria as part of secret U.S.-mediated peace talks that broke off last year.

Syria has long set a complete withdrawal from the Golan Heights as a condition for making peace with the Jewish state. Israel captured the strategic plateau in a 1967 war, then annexed it in 1981 in a move not recognized internationally.

Israeli leaders had consented to at least partial Golan pullbacks in past talks with Syria, though none had gone as far as Netanyahu in agreeing to withdraw to the northeastern shores of the biblical Sea of Galilee, the mass-circulation Yedioth Ahronoth daily said.

The newspaper quoted unspecified American documents as saying Netanyahu had expressed such a readiness, surprising U.S. diplomats during indirect contacts they mediated with Syria two years ago.

These contacts broke off early in 2011 as unrest spread across the Arab world, eventually sparking a full-blown revolt against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

Netanyahu's office said the suggested withdrawal had been a U.S. initiative that Israel had never accepted and dismissed the report as "politically-motivated", citing the fact that it was published just days after the right-wing leader announced he would move up national elections to early next year.

"This was one initiative among many proposed to Israel in recent years. At no stage did Israel accept this American initiative. It is an old and irrelevant initiative," Netanyahu's office said in a statement.

The last formal Israeli-Syrian peace talks, sponsored by Washington, broke off more than 10 years ago and repeated efforts to revive them through contacts and indirect meetings them have failed to yield any breakthroughs.

The main sticking points have been Israel's demand for Syria to fully normalize ties in exchange for any withdrawal and cool its ties with Islamist Iran.

Israel has also balked at Syria's insistence on a complete pullout from the strategically important Golan territory which overlooks both southern Syria and northern Israel.
