NJ Assembly approves social media protections

Two measures aimed at stopping employers and schools from asking for social media passwords have been approved by the New Jersey Assembly.

Lawmakers voted 75-0 on Monday for the school-related protections and 77-0 for the employee-related measure.

The bills would prohibit employers, colleges and universities from requiring current or prospective employees or students to disclose user names or passwords for social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. They also would prohibit asking them if they have an account on a social media or networking site.

Business groups have expressed concern about the measures leading to expensive lawsuits. They also want exceptions for investigating claims against employees, like insider trading or sexual harassment.

The Senate has not yet considered the measures.

Google makes the Nexus 7 tablet official Android 41 Jelly Bean and a $199 price

Some of the mystery has been taken out of it, but Google has officially taken the wraps off of the Nexus 7, its first reference-grade tablet. The 7-inch slate is the first and currently only device shipping with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, and takes advantage of its optimization for smaller tablet screens, magazines and movies -- it's also the first to ship with a finished Chrome for Android. Like what was widely suspected, the tablet is built by ASUS (shades of Eee Pad MeMO ME370T, anyone?) and mostly draws our attention in terms of what we get for the money: that quad-core Tegra 3, 1.2-megapixel front camera, NFC and 1280 x 800, IPS-based LCD are traits we'd normally look for in a pricier tablet. How much pricier, you ask? Google is asking just $199 for a dainty 8GB model and $249 for a 16GB version -- that's a lot of speed for the money, especially with a $25 Google Play credit and a slew of bundled content. There's no SD card slot, however. We'll test the Nexus 7 as soon as we can, but you can swing by Google Play (and possibly local stores) to order one in Australia, Canada, the UK and the US with a mid-July shipping window.

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's opening keynote at our event hub!

Like humans, dolphins have brainy genes

Evolution-wise, bottlenose dolphins have left their mammalian brothers in the dust, and new research is showing what genes they changed to do it. These genes include those involved in brain and metabolism.

These changes could be why dolphins are known to be exceptionally smart, able to use tools, recognize themselves and even communicate with each other and with trainers.

"We are interested in what makes a big brain from a molecular perspective," study researcher Michael McGowen, of Wayne State University School of Medicine in Michigan, told LiveSCience. "We decided to look at genes in the dolphin genome to see if there are similarities in the genes that have changed on the dolphin lineage and those that have changed on the primate lineage."

  1. More science news from msnbc.com

    1. Scientists to reveal Stephen Hawking's 'brain hack'

Science editor Alan Boyle's blog: After months of tweaking, researchers are finally ready to show off a high-tech headband that can translate Stephen Hawking's brain waves into speech.

    2. Seven summer books for smarties
    3. Work unearths ancient road in Greece
    4. Missing link for wonky-eyed flatfish found

The researchers compared about 10,000 genes from the bottlenose dolphin with nine other animals. (These included the cow, horse, dog, mouse, human, elephant, opossum, platypus and chicken ? cows being the dolphin's closest relatives with a sequenced genome.)

By studying its mutations, they pinpointed which genes were "evolving" or what scientists call "being selected for" ? genes that underwent changes and were passed on to future generations of dolphins ? by comparing them to the analogous genes from the other species. If a dolphin gene has more protein-changing mutations than the cow version, for instance, that means it was actively evolving in the dolphin population at some time. [ Animal Code: Our Favorite Genomes ]

Brain changes
More than 200 of the genes in their survey were drastically changed in the dolphins. Twenty-seven of these were involved in the nervous system (like the brain and sensory organs ). There were also many changes in the genes related to metabolism (similar to changes seen in primates), which McGowen said are important because, "brain tissue uses much more energy than other tissues."

While we know these genes are associated with the brain, and this study says the genes are different in smarter animals, the researchers caution against linking them directly. Differences in the gene's "code" doesn't mean the gene actually acts any differently in the animal.

"We may not know exactly what they do yet even in humans or mice (the two most well-characterized mammals from a genetic perspective), much less dolphins; however, their function in the brain points to their importance," McGowen said. "Probably, changes in these genes could have led to the amazing cognitive capacity seen in dolphins ? it definitely points in that direction."

Set apart
Unexpectedly, the researchers also saw that the dolphins were evolving more slowly than some of the other animals, a trait also seen in other mammals with big brains.

"Over time (since the split between dolphins and cows about 70 million years ago), we observe many more mutations or changes in the DNA along the cow branch (and indeed horse and dog branches) than we do along the dolphin branch," McGowen told LiveScience in an email. "This is exactly what we see in primates and elephants."

This is probably because these animals are using a different life-history approach ? investing more in their offspring, but having fewer babies ? which leads to slower evolution.

"It is striking that we see such similar molecular rates between all of these lineages and they have all such comparative large brains," McGowen said of the dolphins and primates.

The research is detailed in the June 27 issue of the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences.

Love Those Kinders!: New Pets and Basics learning packets!

Hello!
First of all, I just figured out how to add a "Follow Me by Email" button, so if you wish to do that, it is now a possibility. Someone asked me? a few months ago if it was possible to subscribe to my blog by email and if I had known then how easy it is to add a button, I would have done it long ago!

Second, I just finished two new "Draw and Cut" packets. The first one is "Draw and Cut Basics." Basics is just what it says - simple steps to creating simple pictures. I always do this with my students at the beginning of school, but never really had anything concrete to show. So I decided to put together a packet that would be easy for even the littlest learners to accomplish as well as provide basic steps for older students. I truly believe that creating books instills so much in children. Creating their own illustrations brings the book alive for them. When they have illustrated a book, they truly are immersed in its content and their learning becomes real.

Before we begin any illustrating, though, we must begin to look at the world through different eyes. When we look at a tree, we see rectangles and cloud shapes. When we look at a house, we see squares and trapezoids, and rectangles. When we look at faces, we see ovals and crescents and rainbow shapes. Once children start to see the world in this way, they are then able to take pencil, paper, and scissors and create something that looks real to them. That is why I always provide a real-life photograph in my packets - this is a great way to differentiate between real and make-believe, too!

I provide step by step directions to my students for many reasons. A big reason is to get them to see objects simply as shapes. When they see this, they are able to create any object! The step by step directions also provide sequencing and visual discrimination practice which is so important for young learners to grasp. Instead of simply cutting out pictures and putting them in order, they are creating something real to them. I? like to look at photographs and find shapes in the photos as well. My students illustrate books for literacy, math, science, social studies, and religion

"Draw and Cut Pets" provides step by step directions for creating a book about pets. After my students have gotten a feel for how to create pictures from shapes, I want them to write about their picture and we start right away with labeling. For those children able to write sentences, I provide word wall cards that can be used for differentiation.

Here is a look at Pets:

If you are interested in either of these packets, click the picture to take you to my TPT store!

I will be sharing my thoughts on Chapter 3 of the Daily 5 later this week!

Unlocking AT&T iphone 4s

Hello,

I have an AT&T iPhone 4s. I am going to be in London and Russia for the next 2 months, and so wanted to unlock the phone so as to be able to use UK and Russian SIM cards.

I first thought I needed to jailbreak it (per the article on Gizmodo in April about unlocking the 4s), but searching thru the forum, it seems that jailbreaking and unlocking can be independent.

Do I need to jailbreak the phone to unlock it? What are the best and easiest ways to unlock the 4s?

Any solutions that would be free and/or minimize information sharing with third parties would be particularly valued.

West Coast sea levels: New report estimates greater rise by 2100

The estimates from the National Research Council, taking advantage of more recent research, range from 19 to 55 inches. The study is expected to become a common frame of reference that coastal communities can use in planning.

If greenhouse-gas emissions continue unabated, the expected additional warming could raise sea levels by up to four or five feet all along the US West Coast by 2100, according to an analysis released Friday by the National Research Council (NRC).

Beyond any real estate permanently inundated, such an increase would bring some $100 billion worth of facilities that currently are high and dry into a new 100-year flood plain, according to previous studies that assumed a comparable increase in sea levels. Those facilities include power plants, airports and seaports, and other big-ticket pieces of infrastructure.

The council, the research arm of the National Academy of Sciences in Washington, produced the report at the request of the state of California.

The study is expected to become a common frame of reference that coastal communities can use to plan their adaptation measures, says Heather Cooley, co-director of the water program for the Pacific Institute, based in Oakland, Calif. The institute focuses on environmental issues and on the sustainable use of resources.

The NRC's estimates are higher than some previous estimates because they take advantage of more recent research than earlier estimates ? notably those estimates published in 2007 by the United Nations-sponsored Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

The NRC's estimates are the latest but not the final word on the subject, Ms. Cooley cautions. As techniques for measuring and analyzing sea-level data improve, and as climate models improve, the numbers are likely to change. The biggest uncertainty: how quickly humans move to curb greenhouse-gas emissions ? most notably carbon dioxide ? in terms of fossil-fuel and land-use changes.

For now, however, "communities can begin to use this as part of their adaptation planning," she says.

The report underscores that several factors combine to determine sea-level rise in any one location. Local wind and ocean-circulation patterns, and even the West Coast's shifting crustal plates, which generate earthquakes and raise volcanoes, can play a role. A magnitude 8 quake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the Pacific Northwest, for instance, could significantly change a coastal community's height above sea level within seconds, according to the study. Intense El Ni?o events can boost sea levels in winter by as much as a foot. Changes to the mass of icecaps in Alaska, Greenland, and Antarctica alter sea levels on the West Coast by changing the distribution of mass on the planet, inducing regional changes in Earth's gravitational field.

Rising sea levels triggered by global warming are superimposed on these natural factors. Warming by itself affects the oceans in several ways. The ocean expands from heating alone. Melting land-based ice contributes. And human-induced changes to river flows also have an effect: Dams tend to reduce rivers' input of water to the oceans, while heavy use of aquifers can increase the flows to the sea.

Between the 2007 IPCC report and the NRC study, new studies have shown thermal expansion to have played a smaller role in sea-level rise than the IPCC estimated. But melting ice's role has grown. The latest estimates attribute 65 percent of the rise in global average sea levels between 1993 and 2008 to melting ice. Ground water and water stored in reservoirs in effect cancel each other out.

The NRC estimates that by 2030, global average sea levels could rise between three and nine inches over 2000 levels, range from six inches to two feet by 2050, and from 19 to 55 inches by 2100. The IPCC's upper estimate from 2007 projects as much as a 23-inch rise by 2100.

For the West Coast, the NRC's figures by century's end are much higher than the IPCC's 2007 projection as well, although different regions take different paths. The report notes that depending on the rate of sea-level rise, north of California's Cape Mendocino, sea levels along the coast could fall roughly a tenth of an inch or more during the first half of the century, largely because of the impact of subduction along the Cascadia Subduction Zone.

As the Pacific Plate slides beneath the Juan de Fuca Plate, it puts upward pressure on the crust to the east. Although the NRC's projections show considerable sea-level rise north of the cape during the latter half of the century, it remains somewhat less than elsewhere along the coast because of this tectonic process. By 2100, the NRC projects an average rise of between four inches and 56 inches north of the cape, and between 17 inches and 66 inches south of it.

The broad ranges in the NCR's estimate reflect in no small part uncertainties in the future rate of glacier and icecap melting, as well as in changes to land height, among other issues. The committee acknowledges that the uncertainties grow larger the further out they try to project.

Regardless of which end of the estimates proves the more likely as time passes, averages don't tell the whole story, adds Robert Dalrymple, a civil engineer at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore who chaired the NRC committee conducting the study.

"As the average sea level rises," he said in a prepared statement, "the number and duration of extreme storm surges and high waves are expected to escalate," increasing the risk of the destruction of wetlands, the erosion of beaches and coastal bluffs, and flooding. ?

Fracking's Biggest Problem May Be What to Do with Wastewater

frackingOf all the troubles with fracking, the biggest?and growing?challenge seems to be what to do with all those millions of gallons of water contaminated with frack chemicals, leached minerals and salts.

Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, is the process of drilling sideways into subterranean shale and blasting it open with millions of gallons of water to release natural gas. The process has spread from Texas to Arkansas to Pennsylvania and criticism on the water front, thus far, has tended to focus on whether industry discloses the kinds of chemicals it uses mixed up in those millions of gallons of H2O.

Now the sustainability think tank Pacific Institute, in a report released on June 21 on water issues of fracking, says fracking?s water woes aren?t confined to just the precise chemicals involved but extend to ensuring wells don?t permit aquifer contamination or whether freshwater is plentiful enough to support the industrial process. There are also the human health and environmental concerns about wastewater spills.

Then there?s the hundreds of millions of gallons of wastewater. The most common means of disposal?pumping the water underground?can cause earthquakes by raising the subsurface pressure?a greater risk than that from fracking in the first place.

The report, which Pacific Institute hopes will separate ?the frack from the fiction,? also finds looming conflicts?and in some cases already existing battles?over water use for fracking and water use for agriculture. After all, fracking in Texas?s Eagle Ford Shale has used up to 13 million gallons of water per well, and even the least intense wells require at least 2.3 million gallons, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

This is no small matter because hydraulic fracturing is expected to help boost natural gas production by nearly 30 percent by 2035. Nearly 80 percent of that 21 trillion cubic feet of future natural gas produced per year will be from shale and other ?unconventional? sources, according to the estimates of the U.S. Energy Information Administration. To fulfill that energy prophecy with fracking will require some smart thinking about water.

Lions speared: Kenya's human-animal conflicts grow

ILKEEK-LEMEDUNG'I, Kenya (AP) ? Crouching at dawn in the savannah's tall grass, the lions tore through the flesh of eight goats. Dogs barked, women screamed and men with the rank of warrior in this village of Maasai tribesman gathered their spears.

Kenya Wildlife Service rangers responded to the attack, but arrived without a veterinarian and no way to tranquilize the eight lions and remove them from Ilkeek-Lemedung'I, a settlement of mud and stone homes not far from the edges of Nairobi National Park.

In the end, the Maasai men ? who come from a tribe renowned for its hunting skills ? grew tired of waiting, said Charity Kingangir, whose father's goats were attacked Wednesday. The men speared the lions, killing six: two adult lionesses, two younger lions and two cubs.

The lions had killed eight goats, each worth about $60.

Wednesday's killings highlight the growing threat to Kenya's wildlife posed by the rapid expansion of its capital. A week earlier, residents from another village on Nairobi's outskirts killed a leopard that had eaten a goat. Last month, wildlife service agents shot and killed a lion moving around the Nairobi suburb of Karen. On Thursday, three lions attacked and killed three goats outside Nairobi National Park. Rangers chased the lions back to the park.

Earlier this week, the Kenya Wildlife Service sent out a public notice pleading with people who encounter wild animals "to desist from killing them."

It summed up the problem in a posting on its Facebook page: "Do animals invade human space, or do humans invade animal space? How can we find tolerance for our wild neighbors? And how can we humanely remove them when they get a bit too close?"

As Nairobi enjoys a boom in apartment and road construction, an expanding population center is putting heavy pressure on the animals, especially big cats. Nairobi National Park is the only wildlife park in the world that lies in a country's capital.

Killing lions is a crime in Kenya, but those who lose livestock to big cats frequently retaliate. About 100 lions are killed each year, and the country's lion population has dropped to about 2,000. Lions, especially ones who leave Nairobi National Park, which is not completely fenced in, are at risk. After Wednesday's killings, the park had 37 left, KWS estimates.

As Nairobi continues to grow, small towns that cropped up on its outskirts expand, fueled by the demand for low-cost housing from the city's working class.

People are settling in traditional migratory corridors that wildlife from Nairobi's park have long used to access the plains to the south around Tanzania's Mount Kilimanjaro, or to travel to Kenya's Maasai Mara in the country's southwest, said Peter M. Ngau, a professor in the department of urban and regional planning at the University of Nairobi.

The herbivores migrate from the park in search of pasture during the dry season and the carnivores follow, KWS official Ann Kahihia said.

"Unfortunately the carnivores do not know the difference between livestock and wild animals. Once they get livestock they just kill them," Kahihia said.

KWS Director Julius Kipngetich says the human population in the Kitengela area, where the six lions were killed, was low in the 1990s but has grown dramatically since the opening of an export processing zone there.

Even the annual migration of the wildebeests from Nairobi National Park to the Athi plains to Nairobi's east has been squeezed by human settlement, he said.

If parliament approves, the Kenyan government will start compensating people whose livestock are maimed or killed as an incentive to spare the attacking animals. KWS spokesman Paul Udoto said the government stopped compensation for wildlife attacks in 1987 after the program was abused.

Kipngetich said other ways of avoiding human-wildlife conflict is to fence parks and compensate at market rates people whose land can be used for conservation purposes.

Jackson Sikeet, who was present during Wednesday's killing of the lions, said the government should compensate the Maasai for the loss of the goats.

"Otherwise if they don't, this problem is going to continue every other time," he said.

ZTE Grand X (U970 and N970) and Grand X LTE (T82) hands-on

ZTE Grand X and Grand X LTE handson

You may recall that ZTE unveiled its Snapdragon MSM8960-powered Grand X LTE handset (pictured right) just a few days ago, but as it turns out, the original Mimosa X design is still very much alive under that new Grand X moniker, and we were able to play with both Android 4.0 devices at Mobile Asia Expo in Shanghai. In fact, there were three models in total, as the Grand X comes in two flavors in China: the U970 for China Mobile comes with 1.2GHz Tegra 2, TD-SCDMA radio, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage and a five-megapixel camera; while the identical-looking N970 for China Telecom packs a 1.5GHz MSM8660A, CDMA2000 radio, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage, microSD expansion and an eight-megapixel camera.

With all the phones attached to various cords we weren't able to get a good sense of their ergonomics, but they were all surprisingly light. In terms of build quality ZTE didn't disappoint, either (at least the casing is certainly a big step up from the Skate), and their 4.3-inch qHD LCDs looked good as well. Oh, and the vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich build flashed onto these devices ran smoothly during our brief hands-on, so hopefully they'll stay that way in the hands of buyers. Help yourself to our photos below.

Giant coupon company to come out of merger

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) ? Coupon-clippers, take note.

The company that owns and distributes Valpak coupons to millions of homes around the U.S. is acquiring one of the biggest online coupon websites. Cox Target Media Inc., told The Associated Press it is acquiring Savings.com and its U.K.-based sister site, Savoo.com.

"What it means for the Valpak brand ... that blue envelope that's so familiar? It's going to make that experience better," said Michael Vivio, the president of Cox Target Media, which is based in Largo, Fla.

Vivio said Wednesday that in the future, customers that receive local deals in the Valpak coupon envelope will also get them from national brands. Eventually, the deals will also be available on a phone app and through other social media sites. Company officials say the acquisition expands both Valpak and the website to encompass traditional, digital, social and mobile platforms.

The acquisition means a shift in the advertising revenue model, Vivio said.

Valpak makes money in a traditional, print media way, he said: businesses pay for the ads in advance and hope there's a corresponding sales bump.

With affiliate marketing sites like Savings.com, Vivio said, the business model is different. Companies send the affiliate marketing sites coupon codes or data feeds to sites that drive traffic to their websites. When a transaction is completed, the company pays a commission to the affiliate site ? meaning the company doesn't spend a dime until a customer buys something.

"The acquisition of Savings.com creates a new business model," said Vivio. "(Companies) will be able to get the eyeballs and mass reach print delivers using the kind of business model that works in affiliate marketing."

A company spokesman said the acquisition cost about $100 million.

Loren Bendele, CEO of the Los Angeles-based Savings.com, said his company won't make the move to Florida.

In 2011, the two companies teamed up to provide online coupons from national retailers on Valpak.com.

"This acquisition gives us a much deeper relationship," said Bendele. "In the past, they took some of our content displayed it on their website. This allows us to get in the envelope and work with our merchant partners and distribute deals through the envelope."

Because Valpak "hyperlocalizes" its direct marketing deals, Bendele said Savings.com will add the social media and Internet component to those consumers, thus broadening the reach of each company.

Cox Media Group is a broadcasting, publishing, direct marketing and digital media company that distributes Valpak, a leading North American direct marketing company. Cox Media has $1.7 billion in revenue, along with 15 television stations, 86 radio stations, eight daily newspapers and more than 100 digital services.

Valpak is distributed to some 44 million U.S. households monthly.

Savings.com offers in-depth databases of online coupons and personalizes deal recommendations for online visitors. It also gives personalized recommendations and allows people to rate coupons and deals. The company says it has more than 5 million visitors monthly.

Portugal dark horse as quarters begin

source: Getty Images

Two weeks ago Portugal looked like a good bet to finish last in Group B. Now they?re favorites to advance from Euro 2012?s quarterfinals. How did this happen? They walked into the Group of Death with most seeing them well behind Germany and the Netherlands. The quartet?s other team was Denmark, a nation that?s bested Portugal in the last two qualifying cycles. Now, they?re bonafide dark horses ? as good a bet as any to win this, beyond Germany and Spain.

The biggest difference has been goals. Between their playoff win over Bosnia and Herzegonvina and the start of Euro 2012, the Seleccao scored one goal in 270 minutes. It wasn?t exactly a shock. Portugal?s established quite a reputation for squandering their attacking talent. Blame the lack of a number nine, or blame former coach Carlos Quieroz. No matter, the scoring drought extended into Group B play, where Portugal was shut out by Germany in their opening match.

Then came a relative explosion. Three goals against Denmark served as revenge. Wrapping up group play, Portugal scored twice against the Netherlands, both goals coming from their dormant giant: Cristiano Ronaldo. If he finally starts bringing his club-world quality to international soccer, Portugal may be more than mere dark horses.

Their Thursday opponents, the Czech Republic, can do for some awakenings of their own. While people debate whether Milan Baros should persist as the team?s starting striker, the leading scorer at Euro 2004 has gone silent. He went the competition?s first 250 minutes without registering a shot on goal. Suffice to say, he remains scoreless.

Combined with the health concerns surrounding captain Tomas Rosicky, and the Czechs may be left relying on their wingers to carry them. To this point, that?s where all their firepower?s come from, with left wing Vaclav Pilar and opposite Petr Jiracek getting help from right back Theodor Gebre Selassie. With Tomas Hubschmann holding down the middle, it?s been enough, albeit against a weak group.

The easy ride stops at 2:45 p.m. Eastern as Euro 2012 starts its quarterfinal round. Here?s your playlist:

1. New pattern

A howler in each of the Czech Republic?s first two games had goalkeeper Petr Cech looking more like his 2008 self than the man who helped carry Chelsea to the Champions League title. Against Poland, however, he made it 90 minutes without an issue, and while that was mostly because of the control the Czechs exerted over the match?s final 60 minutes, results are results. The scoresheet alone really doesn?t provide much context.

On Thursday, Cech?s going to be tested far more often. Cristiano Ronaldo is hitting a run of form, and if that doesn?t translate into questions for Cech, it?s going to at least force some corners. On the other side, Nani has been one of the tournament?s best wingers. His crossing will test Cech?s decision making.

After Robert Lewandowski was taken out of Saturday?s game, Poland didn?t have much to offer. Portugal won?t be so easily dissuaded.

2. Wide view

Portugal?s wingers can cause nightmares, but given how the Czech Republic?s threatened from wide, Paulo Bento and his staff might have had a moment?s pause before falling asleep on Wednesday. Vaclav Pilar could still prove the tournament?s breakout player. Petr Jiracek?s make an impact on each of the two matches he?s started on the right. Theodor Gebre Selassie?s been the competition?s biggest threat from the back.

Bento, however, shouldn?t lose any sleep over the problem. Fullbacks Fabio Coentrao (left) and Joao Periera (right) have given all-tournament performances, and for as good as Nani has been going forward, he has also exhibited years of work drilled into him by Alex Ferguson and Manchester United. While Gebre Selassie is set to start on Cristiano Ronaldo?s side, there?s no reason Portugal?s wingers can?t be flipped. Ronaldo has shown an aversion to starting as a nine, but for one game, he should be willing to move to his less-favored right wing.

3. Remember Holland

Portugal may slowly be leaving the Caros Quieroz era behind, but in their decisive group match against the Netherlands, they reverted to their shell. It was only after the Netherlands took the lead that Portugal woke up. From there forward, they controlled the match. Who would have known the Dutch can?t defend? (Answer: Everybody except Portugal, seemingly.)

Will Bento learn from the Holland match? There?s no reason for them to come out in their shell except reflexive conservatism. Against the Czech Republic, they can do as they did against Germany and Holland, start their midfield deep, and hope the Czechs expose themselves like they did against Russia. Or, they can control the match from the opening kickoff like the better team they are.

4. Time for answers

It seems Michal Bilek has been putting off his team?s attacking issues. I say ?seems? because he doesn?t have a lot of options. If Tomas Necid, their 22-year-old forward protege, isn?t going to be used, there aren?t many alternatives to Milan Baros. There were fitness issues surrounding Necid, but if he isn?t healthy, why is he in the squad?

Baros isn?t the only issue. Tomas Rosicky?s recovering from an Achilles injury that kept him out of the Poland match. That?s one problem. Another is his productivity. Rosicky failed to make an impact in the two games he?s played. It might be best to give Daniel Kolar a second start and leave Rosicky as an as-needed option.

Regardless, Bilek can?t wait any longer. Portugal?s the best team the Czechs have faced since opening against Russia, a game they lost 4-1. He either addresses the attack or leaves the tournament with some ?what ifs?.

The Right Way To Land Engineering Roles | Self Improvement Blogs ...

There are many engineering jobs out there just waiting for folks to take on them, but the fact is that many people are really looking for them in all the wrong places. Indeed, some people will be in a position to find jobs if they?re going to read the newspaper?s special jobs sections, yet in general they?re hard to land, as there is always someone that was quicker and called first.

When it comes to the salary, those working as engineers will not have to stress about not having the ability to pay for their bills at the month?s end. The salary is great and they will be able to afford going in vacations even every month if they opt to.

A big number of roles internet sites can be found by just doing a simple Google search and considering them, folk will easily be able to find the position of their dreams. For example they can just go to www.jobsearch.com.au and skim the job categories there.

New roles are uploaded on a regular basis and this suggests that in the final analysis, people who wishes to get employed will ultimately manage to find an employer. An important step of the procedure of applying is sending a curriculum vitae that is very well written, structured and presented in the requested format by the employer. Not all bosses will need the standard format, so if this rule is not followed, with no regard for how well the CV is written it is going to be denied.

One of the greatest news is simply that corporations will provide fast feedback to candidates, so there?s no need to wait for days on end for an answer that may allegedly never come. With that said, those trying to find engineering jobs will actually need to think about the web as the ultimate solution of landing a job in their selected field!

Mark Read is the Managing Director of www.jobsearch.com.au, One of Australia?s top 5 job assembly websites in Australia. With several thousand roles available in all zones of the Labor Market locally or nationally. Check out thousands of roles and look for your new career today.

ClickTale Brings Its Visitor Tracking Tools To The Mobile Web

clicktale logoIsraeli company ClickTale promises customers a better understanding of what visitors are actually doing on their websites, through tools like visitor recordings and heatmaps showing mouse movements and clicks. Today, it's launching a mobile product in private beta. ClickTale's senior technology evangelist Shmuli Goldberg says that on a conceptual level, the company is trying to bring the same capabilities that it offers for desktop websites to mobile. But in order to make that happen, it had to start tracking a whole new set of behaviors ? not just clicks, but also every swipe, scroll, tilt, and pinch.

Personal Best: Sold on the Feeling, if Not the Benefits to Health

Almost everyone has gotten the message that exercise is important for health. Yet most who start exercise programs stop. Perhaps, researchers say, the way to persuade more people to exercise is to study those rare individuals who love it.

What makes someone a committed exerciser? And how motivating are the much vaunted improvements to health?

Recently these questions have became more urgent. This month, a group of exercise researchers published an analysis of five rigorous studies reporting that about 10 percent of people have an ?adverse response? to exercise. In them, at least one cardiovascular risk factor got worse instead of better.

Some exercise and public health experts worried that people might use the findings as an excuse not to exercise. But that assumes that exercisers are motivated largely by health concerns to begin with.

?When a physician tells a patient, ?You need to make a change for your health,? that can be motivating, especially if the person has a health problem,? said Rodney Dishman, director of the exercise psychology laboratory at the University of Georgia. ?But it usually wanes over time. People don?t feel their bones getting stronger, they don?t feel lipids changing, they don?t feel their blood pressure changing.?

Most who start exercising say the goal is to lose weight or improve their health. But those who begin on the promise of imperceptible health effects often stop, Dr. Dishman said, saying they do not have time, or are too tired after work, or they just lost interest.

And there are no good studies investigating why people keep exercising. Dr. Dishman and others suspect the motivation is sheer pleasure ? feeling energized, a boost in mood, feeling restless and uncomfortable without exercise. And you may not be able to will yourself to have this response.

Biological traits, Dr. Dishman says, ?seem to play a bigger role in both the choice to be active and the outcomes of being active than folks ? namely public health advocates? have been willing to admit.?

Dr. Dishman cites himself as an example of someone who craves exercise. Until about five years ago, he was an avid runner. Then his knee failed him ? severe osteoarthritis ? and he has not been able to run since. He still has dreams that he is running.

But instead of giving up on exercise, he rides a stationary bike simply because working out feels so good to him.

?If I can feel better after 30 minutes of riding in my office, alone, going nowhere, it has got to be something about exercise,? he said. But for him, as for many others, slow, moderate exercise does not bring the same physical pleasure. It must be hard exercise, meaning it has to require real effort, the sort of workout that makes people breathe hard and drip with sweat, Dr. Dishman says.

Many scientists and doctors who are avid exercisers ? and who know and understand the medical science ? say they were never motivated by the thought of improving their heart risk factors.

Barry Zirkin, a reproductive biologist at Johns Hopkins University?s Bloomberg School of Public Health, craves his sport ? basketball ? to the point that three partial tears in each Achilles? tendon did not keep him from it.

His orthopedist told him to stop. ?He knew I wouldn?t stop,? Dr. Zirkin said. ?And I haven?t.?

?I almost define a part of me by that game,? Dr. Zirkin added. ?Actually, I do define a part of me by the jock part. It?s ridiculous, I know. But it is what it is.?

Dr. Christine Lawless, a chairwoman of the American College of Cardiology?s Sports and Exercise Cardiology Council, was a competitive figure skater until she was in her late 40s. She was motivated by competition, by wanting to win.

Then she broke her left leg during a bad jump. She could not exercise for six months.

?I was so depressed,? Dr. Lawless said. ?I knew I wasn?t going to skate again. I really had to change my mindset. I had to think about other ways to motivate myself.?

Dr. Lawless, who is now 59, exercises for about an hour a day five days a week, through yoga and walking and lifting weights. She says her motivation now is a desire to stay active and flexible for the rest of her life. But for her, like Dr. Dishman and Dr. Zirkin, exercise also is an innate pleasure, important to her sense of well-being.

?I feel like I haven?t had a good day unless I exercise,? Dr. Lawless said.

Perhaps it is wrong to think that the way to encourage people to exercise is to emphasize the benefits to their health, Dr. Dishman said. But what about a medical scientist who actually has heart disease? Would an adverse exercise response make a difference?

That?s him, says Dr. Robert Green of Harvard Medical School. He used to run, but eventually his joints could not take it. So he rides a bicycle and swims instead.

Adverse effects, he said, would not deter him. What does it actually mean to say your blood pressure goes up by a few points with exercise, he asks. There are no data on long-term health effects, like heart attacks and strokes, in exercisers who have adverse responses.

So he simply does not care. Exercise makes him feel good. And if he were to have an adverse effect, like a rise in blood pressure?

?I?d keep exercising.?

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Rodney King, the black motorist whose 1991 videotaped beating by Los Angeles police officers was the touchstone for one of the most destructive race riots in the nation's history, died Sunday. He was 47.

King's fianc? called 911 at 5:25 a.m. to report that she found him at the bottom of the swimming pool at their home in Rialto, Calif., police Lt. Dean Hardin said.

Officers arrived to find King in the water and unresponsive, with no signs of foul play. He was transported to Arrowhead Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:11 a.m, Hardin said.

The San Bernardino County coroner will perform an autopsy within 48 hours.

The 1992 riots, which were set off by the acquittals of the officers who beat King, lasted three days and left 55 people dead, more than 2,000 injured and swaths of Los Angeles on fire. At the height of the violence, King pleaded on television: "Can we all get along?"

King was stopped for speeding on a darkened street on March 3, 1991. Four Los Angeles police officers hit him more than 50 times with their batons, kicked him and shot him with stun guns.

A man who had quietly stepped outside his home to observe the commotion videotaped most of it and turned a copy over to a TV station. It was played over and over for the following year, inflaming racial tensions across the country.

It seemed that the videotape would be the key evidence to a guilty verdict against the officers, whose trial was moved to the predominantly white suburb of Simi Valley, Calif. Instead, on April 29, 1992, a jury with no black members acquitted three of the officers; a mistrial was declared for a fourth.

Violence erupted immediately, starting in South Los Angeles.

Police, seemingly caught off-guard, were quickly outnumbered by rioters and retreated. As the uprising spread to the city's Koreatown area, shop owners armed themselves and engaged in running gun battles with looters.

During the riots, a white truck driver named Reginald Denny was pulled by several black men from his cab and beaten almost to death. He required surgery to repair his shattered skull, reset his jaw and put one eye back into its socket.

The police chief, Daryl Gates, came under intense criticism from city officials who said officers were slow to respond to the riots. He was forced to retire. Gates died of cancer in 2010.

In the two decades after he became the central figure in the riots, King was arrested several times, mostly for alcohol-related crimes. He later became a record company executive and a reality TV star, appearing on shows such as "Celebrity Rehab."

In an interview earlier this year with The Associated Press, King said he was a happy man.

"America's been good to me after I paid the price and stayed alive through it all," he says. "This part of my life is the easy part now
