Obama's Inauguration Might Have Trouble Paying Its Bills

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop star Britney Spears on Friday called it quits with both fianc? Jason Trawick and as a celebrity judge on "The X Factor" talent show. Spears, 31, and Trawick, 41 - her former agent - got engaged in December 2011. "Jason and I have decided to call off our engagement," Spears said in a statement. "I'll always adore him and we will remain great friends." The couple began dating in May 2010, following a turbulent few years in Spears' personal and professional life in which she lost custody of her children, entered rehab and shaved off her hair. ...

'Trade war' over golf resort plans

The National Trust is waging a trade war on the developers of a proposed ?100 million golf resort close to the Giant's Causeway to protect its own commercial interest, a court has heard.

Concern about the environmental impact of the Bushmills Dunes complex is not the primary motivation behind the Trust's legal challenge against the approval of planning permission, a barrister for the course's financial backers has told Belfast High Court.

Stephen Shaw QC said the Trust's attitude to any bid to develop in the area followed comedian Groucho Marx's famous maxim - "Whatever it is, I'm against it."

The conservation charity has taken a judicial review over Environment Minister Alex Attwood's decision to give the resort the green light last year. It claims the minister acted against guidelines issued by Unesco - the organisation that bestowed world heritage status on the nearby causeway - by failing to properly consult with Unesco's World Heritage Committee.

The Trust also contends that he did not fully consider the potential ecological damage the development would inflict or whether the project's ambitious economic and job creation predictions actually stacked up.

Since Mr Attwood's decision last February, the World Heritage Committee of Unesco has called for a halt to the development until a fuller assessment of its impact is undertaken

In the first two days of the case, judge Mr Justice Ronald Weatherup heard both the Trust and Mr Attwood's legal representatives make their cases. On the case's final day, Mr Shaw, representing the developers, claimed there were other factors driving the Trust's challenge.

"The Trust cloaks itself as a guardian of the environment and conservation interests," he said. "We're not disputing that it doesn't have a function in that role but what's less appreciated is the National Trust is also a business, a commercial enterprise.

"This (case) is the commercial wing of the National Trust at war with what it perceives to be an economic and trade rival. This is what really lies behind this latest attempt to derail this project."

Bringing the three-day review to a close, Justice Weatherup said: "I will try to issue a decision as soon as I can get the opportunity to do so."

Dedifferentiation ? Turning Back the Cellular Clock

?But a civilized man is better off than the savage in this respect. He can go up against gravitation in a balloon, and why should he not hope that ultimately he may be able to stop or accelerate his drift along the Time-Dimension, or even turn about and travel the other way?? in ?The Time Machine? by Herbert George Wells, 1895.

Thanks to Albert Einstein?s work on special relativity in the early 1900s, physicists have accepted time as the fourth dimension along with the three dimensions of space. However, even before Einstein, H.G. Wells in ?The Time Machine? had alluded to the concept of time as a separate dimension. This classic along with numerous examples in history point to the centuries-old human fascination and yearning for time travel. Theoretical physicists have pored over tons of data and complicated equations, talked about wormholes and black holes hoping to get clues on this elusive concept. And in a way, we are all time travelers, hurtling down this fourth dimension super-highway.

However, we are forced to travel in a unidirectional manner and only at a speed dictated by time. Hence, it is safe to say that our dream of ?true? time travel is still unfulfilled and we are as far removed from achieving it as we were at the beginning of time!

On the other hand, biologists have been trying and have finally succeeded in making cells go back in time, in terms of their developmental stage. They have successfully turned back the clock on cells to convert the so-called terminally differentiated cells into a more primitive stage. Development of these inducible pluripotent stem cells has been one of the most significant developments in biology, particularly in the field of stem cell research.

The year 2012 would have to be regarded as an important year for stem cell research owing to the many seminal advances in this field. But perhaps the biggest nod to the importance of stem cells to basic research and clinical translation came from the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine. Recognizing the importance of this area of research, the Committee awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 2012 to Sir John B. Gurdon and Dr. Shinya Yamanaka ?for the discovery that mature cells can be reprogrammed to become pluripotent?.

As early as 1962, Gurdon showed that after the nucleus from a frog egg was replaced by a nucleus from a mature, specialized cell, the egg still developed into a fully functional tadpole. This experiment suggested that even mature cells possess genetic information required to produce every cell in an organism (pluripotency). Over 4 decades later, Yamanaka showed that differentiated cells could be driven back developmentally to a more primitive stage. Cells could be reprogrammed to an embryonic-like state just by introducing four genes for proteins called transcription factors.

These reprogrammed cells are designated inducible pluripotent stem cells and can be generated from any tissue or organ of an individual. The two biggest problems with embryonic stem cells are the ethical issues surrounding the source of these cells (human embryos) and the potential risk of rejection following transplantation. Human inducible pluripotent stem cells overcome both these limitations and hence hold unlimited potential for medical therapies.

Another group of stem cells that have been getting some attention in recent years are the cancer-initiating cells or cancer stem cells. Researchers have been trying to identify the cell(s) of origin for cancer as this may help develop strategies to prevent cancer or treat it more effectively. Cancer stem cells were first identified in 1997 in acute myeloid leukemia and have subsequently been detected in many cancers. It is still not entirely clear how they originate or how they are regulated. However, it is understood that cancer stem cells:

  • Can give rise to cancers
  • Can drive uncontrolled growth of tumors
  • Are highly resistant to chemotherapy and radiation
  • May be the most important reason for failure of treatment to ?cure? cancer completely

Cancer stem cells have properties similar to normal stem cells and hence, have the potential for infinite growth and multipotency; they can differentiate to form the multitude of cells that constitute a tumor. This model in which cancer stem cells are the cells of origin and they in turn produce more differentiated tumor cells is described as a hierarchical model. This model has largely replaced the stochastic model that describes cancers to be composed of cells that have equal tumorigenic potential.

Glioblastoma is a highly aggressive tumor of the central nervous system. Very few people with this deadly disease survive past two years. In an attempt to develop more effective treatment alternatives, scientists have been trying to identify the cell(s) of origin for glioblastoma. A 2002 study first described cancer stem cells for glioblastoma (1). Like other cancer stem cells, they can propagate indefinitely, express markers for neural stem cells and generate tumors in animal models. Important from the therapeutic standpoint is the fact that these cells are highly resistant to standard of care therapies for glioblastoma and are also the main reason behind tumor recurrence following surgery, radiation and chemotherapy.

In spite of intense research, what exactly triggers the formation of a glioblastoma cancer stem cell remains elusive. Further, most researchers believe that these cancer stem cells originate from either normal neural stem cells or early progenitor cells. However, in a recent study, researchers at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies (La Jolla CA) challenge this dogma and show that cortical neurons in the brain can ?go back in time?, revert to a stem cell-like state and in turn produce tumors (2). This study represents a paradigm shift in our understanding of glioblastoma because of two main reasons:

  • Mature neurons were thought to be terminally differentiated and incapable of any further transformation
  • Glioblastomas were never before shown to arise from neuronal cells

The approach taken by these researchers in their study was to genetically turn off the expression of two tumor suppressor proteins, p53 and neurofibromatosis type I (NF1) in the mouse central nervous system. The knockdown of these two proteins caused cortical neurons in the mouse brain to reprogram back to an immature or stem cell-like state. These cells now had a high expression of stem cell markers and a decreased expression of differentiation markers. This indicates that the cortical neurons underwent transformation to a more primitive phenotype.

More importantly, they were able to produce tumors in mouse brains. Thus, following knockdown of p53 and NF1, cortical neurons regressed developmentally and formed glioblastoma cancer stem cells capable of tumorigenesis. Apart from neurons, glial cells and neural stem cells were also able to produce tumors following p53 and NF1 knockdown.

The prevalent view on glioblastoma formation is that normal neural stem cells in the brain undergo malignant transformation and produce tumors. Hence, this is a landmark study that demonstrates how existing populations of mature brain cells, including neurons and glial cells can ?enter a time machine and travel back to their developmental past? to a more primitive, stem-like state (a process called dedifferentiation) and eventually lead to tumor formation. Of course, the findings from this study need to be validated in human cells. But this study offers a possible explanation of the recurrence of glioblastomas following conventional therapy.

In the same study, when mouse tumors generated were analyzed, their molecular profiles resembled a highly aggressive variant of glioblastomas observed clinically, designated as the mesenchymal subtype. Apart from this subtype, a previous study (3) has described three other variants, each with its distinct molecular signature. It is very likely that each of these subtypes originates from a distinct cancer stem cell type, which in turn may be produced by dedifferentiation of different cell populations in the central nervous system.

The implication of this complexity is that an effective treatment strategy against this disease would need to include detailed molecular analyses of tumor signatures in order to personalize therapy. Findings from this study are important?to understand the pathogenesis of glioblastoma and to design more effective treatment options. If a therapeutic agent can block dedifferentiation of cells, it may effectively get rid of cancer stem cell populations and prove to be a highly valuable adjunct to current therapies against glioblastoma.

Michigan State University Professor Charles Ballard told an audience at the Detr...

Michigan State University Professor Charles Ballard told an audience at the Detroit Economic Club recently that per-capita earnings in right-to-work states are about $5,000 less than in non-right-to-work states.

What he didn't say was that Michigan's per-capita earnings as a non-right-to-work state were below right-to-work states in 2011.

Those saying that right-to-work per-capita income is higher than non-right-to-work states often don't take into consideration the trends when compared to forced unionization states. Those poorer states were earning less even before right-to-work became an option. In recent decades, right-to-work states have grown faster in population, jobs and income when compared to forced unionization states.

The first states to give workers the freedom to choose whether they want to pay to be in a union as a condition of employment did so in 1947.

States that adopted right-to-work laws didn't become poor because of the law. Most were struggling already. For example, Texas' per capita income was on average $540 from 1929 to 1946, which at that time put it 36 percent below the average per capita income of the states that became non-right-to-work states. In 2011, Texas? per capita income was $40,147 and was just 8 percent below the per capita income of non-right-to-work states.

The evangelical pastor chosen to give the benediction at President Barack Obama's inauguration withdrew from the ceremony Thursday after remarks surfaced that he made two decades ago condemning the gay rights movement.

The Rev. Louie Giglio of Passion City Church in Atlanta said in a statement he withdrew because it was likely that the "prayer I would offer will be dwarfed by those seeking to make their agenda the focal point of the inauguration."

Addie Whisenant, a spokeswoman for the Presidential Inaugural Committee, said the committee had chosen Giglio because of his work to end human trafficking. Giglio organizes the Passion evangelical conferences that draw tens of thousands of young people.

"We were not aware of Pastor Giglio's past comments at the time of his selection and they don't reflect our desire to celebrate the strength and diversity of our country at this inaugural," Whisenant said in a statement.

The liberal website ThinkProgress posted audio of the sermon Wednesday. In the talk, which the pastor said he gave 15 or 20 years ago, Giglio cited Scripture and called same-sex relationships sinful and an abomination. He warned congregants about what he called the "aggressive agenda" for acceptance of the "homosexual lifestyle." And he recommended the writings of an advocate for therapy that aims to convert gays and lesbians into heterosexuals. Repeatedly in the sermon, Giglio urged congregants to welcome gays and lesbians to the church and said God loves them.

"Speaking on this issue has not been in the range of my priorities in the past 15 years," Giglio said, in announcing he would withdraw. He framed the conflict over his participation as a question of religious freedom.

"The issue of homosexuality ... is one of the most difficult our nation will navigate," he wrote on his church blog. "However, individuals' rights of freedom, and the collective right to hold differing views on any subject is a critical balance we, as a people, must recover and preserve."

Obama's inaugural planners have put an emphasis on reflecting diversity in the festivities, including the participation of conservative Christians and gay Americans. Obama personally selected Richard Blanco, whose work explores his experience as a Cuban-American gay man, as the inaugural poet. And the Lesbian and Gay Band Association of St. Louis was one of the first selections to march in the inaugural parade.

An inaugural official said the Presidential Inaugural Committee vetted Giglio. But their statement said they didn't know about that particular sermon. Whisenant said the committee was considering others to deliver the benediction at the Jan. 21 event.

Ross Murray, the faith program director for the gay advocacy group GLAAD, urged the committee to choose someone for the role who reflects "the growing sentiment in the U.S. and in faith communities that LGBT people are full and equal parts of society."

Several evangelical leaders called such demands evidence of liberal intolerance.

"Some are wondering if those who hold to traditional evangelical beliefs on homosexuality are no longer welcome in the public square," wrote Ed Stetzer, head of the research arm of the Southern Baptist Convention, on his blog.

Obama faced a similar uproar in 2009, when he chose prominent pastor Rick Warren to give the inaugural benediction as an olive branch to evangelicals, who overwhelmingly vote Republican. Warren had compared gay relationships to incest and pedophilia. He had also urged congregants at his Saddleback Church in California to support the Proposition 8 ban on gay marriage on the 2008 state ballot. Despite pressure from gay rights advocates for Warren to bow out, the pastor gave the benediction.

Fallen Anniston police officer honored with portrait on Rose Parade float

A young man with a big heart and a love of life ? that?s how Jeniffer Morris remembers her son, Justin Sollohub.

The stories Morris tells about her oldest boy also portray him as a selfless police officer, loving son, devoted older brother and a loyal fraternity member whose uncommon willingness to help others made him special.

Even in death, he managed to keep giving.

Sollohub, an Anniston, Ala., police officer, was just 27 when he was shot in the line of duty while pursuing a suspect on Aug. 24, 2011. A little more than 24 hours later, Justin?s family said goodbye to him ? but not before, through their grief, they helped four other families get a second chance with their loved ones through organ donation.

Now Sollohub?s gift, his memory and his sacrifice will be celebrated at the 2013 Rose Parade in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 1. He is one of 72 organ donors who will be remembered with a?memorial floragraph?? a portrait made from flowers ? sponsored by the?Alabama Organ Center?and the?University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital?on the Donate Life float, ?Journeys of the Heart.?

?As a family we had talked about organ donation and all had the belief that donation would be our wish,? Morris said. ?We all felt that if someone else could have a second chance at life, we wanted to give that to them. Justin would be proud to know we honored his wishes. I believe he knows we are proud of him for what he accomplished in life as well as death.?

The Alabama Organ Center (AOC) ?is proud to be a floragraph sponsor,? Executive Director Chris Meeks said. ?For us, the Morrises represent the hundreds of donor families from Alabama who have graciously risen above their grief to help others. The float itself is a beautiful visual representation of donation and transplantation.?

The?2013 Donate Life Rose Parade float?will carry 32 riders and honor organ, eye and tissue donors. Each of the individuals portrayed in the 72 floragraphs left a positive impact on their family, communities and those they helped. The floragraphs will line a heart-shaped path rising above the riders aboard the float, which dramatizes the ups and downs experienced by donor families, transplant recipients and living donors.

?In participating in the parade, we are not only celebrating the life of Justin Sollohub with his family, we are celebrating the lives of all of those who have generously given the gift of life to others, both donors and their families,? said Devin E. Eckhoff, M.D., director of the?UAB Division of Transplantation?and medical director of the AOC. ?We hope our participation helps to raise awareness of organ donation so that the thousands of people waiting for a transplant can receive the gift of life.?

The float?s floragraphs, including Sollohub?s, will be partially decorated in Pasadena by volunteers. Sollohub?s floragraph will then be shipped to Alabama to be completed by his family and friends at two decorating events ? one at Jacksonville State University?s Delta Chi fraternity house on Dec. 7, 2012, and another at UAB Hospital on Dec. 18 from 2-3:30 p.m. in the North Pavilion atrium. Sollohub attended Jacksonville State University, earning a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. He was an active member of Delta Chi throughout his four years in school, and his fraternity has remembered him with the Justin Sollohub Scholarship at Jacksonville State.

?Delta Chi was special to Justin because they were his extended family from the time he joined them in 2002 until he died,? Morris said. ?He had a bond with all of his fraternity brothers that many people could never understand. They were by his side through his college years and beyond. They will remain family forever and they are active in keeping his memory alive. We believe it only fitting to have the decorating event at the house he considered his second home.?

Morris, her husband, Byron, and their son, Blake, will travel to Pasadena to see Sollohub?s completed portrait adorn the float. They also will participate in events before and after the 124-year-old Rose Parade.

?For Justin to be honored in a national forum shows us that many others realize what we have always known ? that he was a great person and a joy to be around,? Morris said. ?For people who did not know him, maybe they can learn just one thing from him ? from tragedy and loss can come a new life and miracle for someone else.?

Today, more than 115,000 candidates are on the national organ transplant waiting list. Largely due to the rarity of donation opportunities, only about 28,000 organs are transplanted each year. As a result, 18 candidates die each day for lack of a donor. A single organ donor can save the lives of eight people, while a single tissue donor can save and heal 50 others through needed heart valves, corneas, skin, bone and tendons that mend hearts, prevent or cure blindness, heal burns and save limbs. Some 100 million Americans have checked ?yes? for donation when applying for or renewing their driver?s licenses or identification cards. Sign up as an organ, eye and tissue donor by visiting?www.alabamaorgancenter.org.

Quotable Quotes

This year I want one person running Israel, to show me one scrap of light. One move, any move, for freedom, for all the people who live here. One stop, no matter how slight, in the direction of a better future. What makes this Hannukkah different? It's the dark. It's the sense that this country - beset by enemies, beset by itself - has locked down every single door against the future and sealed shut every last window against hope...This country has begun to feel like a lamp whose body is cracked and whose light seems all but spent. On these long nights, we can make out little but an occupation growing ever more permanent, and a democracy growing even more temporary.

Ubuntu Cloud versions are typically used by cloud host providers, because the type of hosting uses a lot of data power and resources that can only be found in an enterprise data center.

In September 2012, the OpenStack Foundation was established between the Ubuntu operating system, Rackspace and NASA. OpenStack is a cloud hosting infrastructure used to support thousands of hosts seamlessly to end-users. The technology is called ?Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IAAS),? meaning businesses can limit expensive server hardware and run applications in the cloud. The cost to the business is only the?cost of the?resources used ??instead of a flat rate. The infrastructure can support small and large businesses, so these entities can provide high performance services in the cloud.

Because Ubuntu is open source, businesses can opt to use Ubuntu on personal and employee workstations with the OpenStack infrastructure for cloud support. Combining the same operating system between the two data points alleviates any technical issues and reduces the time it takes to deploy new applications. Of course, Ubuntu can still work with heterogeneous environments for companies needing to support a Windows, Linux and Macintosh network.

Ubuntu also offers private and public cloud environments. Private clouds are for businesses that need to host applications in the cloud, but all public traffic from the Internet must be blocked off for security reasons. Conversely, a public cloud is one that hosts public applications such as websites and cloud-based apps that share data among users. In some cases, the business might want both for internal applications and for?shared apps?used by customers.

Ubuntu also bundles Metal-as-a-Service (MAAS). This technology allows businesses to support scalability in the cloud. For instance, if server resources are running low, the administrator can add resources remotely through Ubuntu?s administration panel. Additionally, for software deployment, Ubuntu uses a process called Juju. Developers create packages called Juju Charms. The Ubuntu operating system recognizes and deploys the software updates as a service. Streamlined deployments reduce the possibility of errors and bugs in server software.

With the number of options for Linux, businesses can safely choose Ubuntu as a fast-performing, reliable cloud operating system. Before purchasing any hosting option, make sure the cloud service offers support for the applications needed by the business.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama will nominate Chuck Hagel as his next defense secretary, a senior administration official said Sunday, choosing a former Senate colleague and a decorated Vietnam veteran and signaling he's ready for a contentious confirmation fight likely dominated by questions about Hagel's stands on Israel and Iran.

Obama, who avoided a Capitol Hill battle by deciding not to nominate U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice as his first choice for secretary of state, went ahead with Hagel, 66, even as leading Republicans announced their opposition ? though they stopped short of saying they might try to block Hagel.

Seeking to soften the ground, the White House was alerting Senate Democrats that Hagel's selection as the successor to Defense Secretary Leon Panetta in Obama's second-term Cabinet was imminent, according to a congressional official.

Obama, who returned to Washington on Sunday from his Hawaiian vacation, was expected to nominate Hagel on Monday. Congress is on break this coming week.

The officials requested anonymity in order to discuss Hagel's nomination ahead of Obama.

Hagel, a moderate Republican, built a strong relationship with Obama during their travel as senators. But the former Nebraska lawmaker has faced withering criticism from Congress since emerging as the front-runner for the Pentagon post.

Hagel is the second straight Obama favorite for a top national security post to face criticism from Capitol Hill even before being nominated. Rice withdrew her name from consideration for secretary of state amid charges from GOP senators that she misled the public in her initial accounting of the attacks on Americans at a diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya.

After Rice withdrew, Obama named Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass, to lead the State Department. Kerry is expected to be easily confirmed by his longtime Senate colleagues.

If confirmed, Hagel would take over a Pentagon that faces budget cuts and a scaling back of the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan. Afghan President Hamid Karzai is expected to meet with Obama in Washington this week to discuss the U.S. presence in Afghanistan after the war formally concludes at the end of 2014.

Hagel is likely to support a more rapid withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, the top Senate Republican, said earlier Sunday that he was reserving judgment on whether to support Hagel. But he predicted the former Nebraska senator would face serious questions about his stands on Iran and Israel.

Any nominee must have "a full understanding of our close relationship with out Israeli allies, the Iranian threat and the importance of having a robust military," McConnell said on ABC's "This Week."

Hagel has criticized discussion of a military strike by either the U.S. or Israel against Iran. He has also backed efforts to bring Iran to the table for talks on future peace in Afghanistan. Some lawmakers have been troubled by his comments and actions on Israel, including his reference to the "Jewish lobby" in the United States.

"This is a controversial pick," Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., told CNN. "He is an antagonistic figure when it comes to the state of Israel. It's a signal you're sending to Iran at the worst possible time and to our allies."

McConnell, R-Ky., said Hagel, who left the Senate in 2009, has "certainly been outspoken in foreign policy and defense over the years. The question we will be answering, if he's the nominee, is do his views make sense for that particular job?"

McConnell said he would "wait and see how the hearings go and see whether Chuck's views square with the job he would be nominated to do." He added, "I'm going to take a look at all the things that Chuck has said over the years and review that, and in terms of his qualifications to lead our nation's military."

The second-ranking Senate Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, said in a statement that making Hagel defense secretary would be "the worst possible message we could send to our friend Israel and the rest of our allies in the Middle East." Cornyn did not say he would try to block a Hagel nomination.

Obama, in an interview that aired last week on NBC's "Meet the Press," called Hagel "a patriot" who "has done extraordinary work" in the Senate and on an intelligence advisory board.

Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, the second-ranking Senate Democrat, told CNN's "State of the Union" that Hagel "is a serious candidate if the president chooses to name him."

Google executive chairman and ex-New Mexico Gov. Richardson heading to North Korea

BEIJING, China - The Google chairman wants a first-hand look at North Korea's economy and social media in his private visit Monday to the communist nation, his delegation said, despite misgivings in Washington over the timing of the trip.

Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of one of the world's biggest Internet companies, is the highest-profile U.S. executive to visit North Korea ? a country with notoriously restrictive online policies ? since young leader Kim Jong Un took power a year ago.

Schmidt departed Beijing on Monday aboard a flight to Pyongyang with a delegation led by former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who has travelled more than a half-dozen times to North Korea over the past 20 years. Richardson called the trip a private, humanitarian mission.

"This is not a Google trip, but I'm sure he's interested in some of the economic issues there, the social media aspect. So this is why we are teamed up on this," Richardson said without elaborating on what he meant by the "social media aspect."

"We'll meet with North Korean political leaders. We'll meet with North Korean economic leaders, military. We'll visit some universities. We don't control the visit. They will let us know what the schedule is when we get there," he said.

Richardson also said the delegation plans to inquire about a Korean-American U.S. citizen detained in North Korea.

"We're going to try to inquire the status, see if we can see him, possibly lay the groundwork for him coming home," Richardson said. "I heard from his son who lives in Washington state, who asked me to bring him back. I doubt we can do it on this trip."

The four-day trip, which is taking place just weeks after North Korea fired a satellite into space using a long-range rocket, has drawn criticism from U.S. officials. Washington condemned the Dec. 12 launch, which it considers a test of ballistic missile technology, as a violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions barring Pyongyang from developing its nuclear and missile programs. The Security Council is deliberating whether to take further action.

"We don't think the timing of the visit is helpful, and they are well aware of our views," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters last week.

The trip was planned well before North Korea announced its plans to send a satellite into space, two people with knowledge of the delegation's plans told The Associated Press. AP first reported the group's plans last Thursday. Schmidt, a staunch proponent of Internet connectivity and openness, is expected to make a donation during the visit, members of the delegation told AP. They spoke on condition of anonymity, saying they were not authorized to divulge details of the delegation's plans to the media.

The visit is the first by a Google executive to North Korea and comes just days after Kim, who took power following the Dec. 17, 2011, death of his father, Kim Jong Il, laid out a series of policy goals for North Korea in a lengthy New Year's speech. He cited expanding science and technology as a means to improving the country's economy as a key goal for 2013.

Computer and cellphone use is gaining ground in North Korea's larger cities.

However, most North Koreans only have access to a domestic Intranet system, not the World Wide Web. For North Koreans, Internet use is still strictly regulated and allowed only with approval.

Schmidt, who oversaw Google's expansion into a global giant, speaks frequently about the importance of providing people around the world with Internet access and technology.

Google now has offices in more than 40 countries, including all three of North Korea's neighbours: Russia, South Korea and China, another country criticized for systematic Internet censorship.

Accompanying Schmidt is Jared Cohen, a former U.S. State Department policy and planning adviser who heads Google's New York-based think-tank . The two collaborated on a book about the Internet's role in shaping society called "The New Digital Age," which comes out in April.

Oil down slightly, natural gas continues to drop

NEW YORK (AP) ? Oil prices are falling Tuesday as traders take their cue from U.S. stock markets, and investors await the start of the earnings season.

Meanwhile, natural gas prices are dropping again following a report showing production is at record levels.

Benchmark oil fell 29 cents to $92.90 a barrel in New York. The price edged close to $94 a barrel earlier as European stocks gained, but then dropped when U.S. markets opened lower. Alcoa posts fourth-quarter results after the markets close, the first of the major companies to announce earnings. Investors are concerned that many will have weak showings in the coming weeks, reflecting the economy's sluggish recovery.

Natural gas fell 5 cents to $3.23 per 1,000 cubic feet, continuing a decline that started around midday Monday when the Energy Department reported that natural gas production rose to a record 73.54 trillion cubic feet a day in October. In addition some analysts lowered their estimates for natural gas prices because of the mild weather that much of the country experienced in November and December.

Oil traders will be monitoring fresh information this week on U.S. supplies of crude and refined products.

Data for the week ending Jan. 4 is expected to show a rise of 1.5 million barrels for crude oil and an increase of 2.6 million barrels in gasoline stocks, according to a survey of analysts by Platts, the energy information arm of McGraw-Hill Cos.

The American Petroleum Institute will release its report on oil stocks later Tuesday, while the report from the Energy Department's Energy Information Administration ? the market benchmark ? will be out on Wednesday.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, rose 14 cents to $111.50 a barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on the Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline added 1 cent to $2.79 a gallon.

? Heating oil rose 3 cents to $3.06 a gallon.

Nvidia Shield Handheld - DVD Talk Forum

Announced today. Between Ouya and now this a $400 console seems less and less desirable.

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/01/...aming-handheld

Nvidia has introduced Project Shield, an Android-based gaming handheld. The system uses the company's new Tegra 4 processor and is housed within a controller with a flip-up screen, complete with its own integrated sound system and the complete array of controls you'd find on a traditional console controller. It features an HDMI port for video output, micro-USB for accessories and docks, and a microSD port for expandable storage. While the exact specs are still forthcoming, Project Shield has a 5-inch 720p HD display. The system, Nvidia says, is "pure Android," which gives it unhindered access to the standard Android interfaced, as well as apps and games from the Google Play store.

Harnessing the power of Tegra 4, Nvidia demonstrated the system outputting HD video and realtime games to a 4K display with no framerate lag or degradation.

Using software built by Nvidia, the Shield provides remote access to the games installed on your gaming PC at home, including Steam titles. Users can play any PC game on the Shield from anywhere within the same local Wi-Fi network.

Pricing has yet to be revealed, but Nvidia says Project Shield will ship in Q2 of this year. We'll be getting hands-on time with Project Shield later this week, so stay tuned to IGN.com/CES for updates.

Tunisian FM accused in 'Sheraton-gate' scandal

TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) ? Tunisia's foreign minister has been accused by a blogger of misusing public funds in a growing national scandal involving issues of government transparency and press freedom.

Olfa Riahi, who calls herself an investigative journalist, is now banned from leaving Tunisia and is under investigation by the attorney general after posting receipts alleging that Foreign Minister Rafik Abdessalam stayed several nights in the Tunis Sheraton Hotel using public money.

Abdessalam denies the allegations in what's been dubbed the "Sheraton-gate" scandal. He is the son-in-law of a founder of Tunisia's Islamist ruling party.

In a statement, the minister has decried both hidden and visible groups behind "these systematic attacks which seek to personally discredit me as well as the government I belong to" and said he had hired a team of legal experts in defamation.

Criticizing government figures was once unthinkable in Tunisia until a revolution two years ago overthrew the long ruling dictator, sparking a wave of uprisings across the region known as the Arab Spring.

Riahi has been defended by one of the top officials of a secular party in the governing coalition, which is led by the moderate Islamist Ennahda Party.

Mohammed Abbou, the secretary general of the Conference for the Republic, publicly backed Rihai and voiced his support for "freedom of the press and investigative journalism," reviving speculation over splits with its coalition partner.

The receipts from the Sheraton posted by Riahi on Dec. 26 allege Abdessalam spent six nights at public expense, including one accompanied by an unidentified woman, raising suspicions of adultery. The minister has denied any wrongdoing and described the woman as his cousin.

Riahi followed up these allegations on Dec. 29 with documents showing that the Chinese government transferred a million dollars directly into a Foreign Ministry account rather than going via the Finance Ministry or public treasury as is the custom.

The ministry has said the money was reimbursement for a conference on Tunisia-Chinese relations.

The state news agency reported Jan. 3 that the attorney general had opened an investigation over the credibility of the information she had published.

Riahi risks a two-year prison sentence if convicted of maligning a public official with false information. In an interview with the daily La Presse, however, she expressed confidence in her legal position. "I am not exposed to any danger," she said. "I presented only hints and strong suspicions, not direct accusations."

A group of lawyers has also threatened to file suit against the foreign minister over the misuse of public funds.

In a statement Jan. 2, the Tunisian Association for Financial Transparency said the minister needed to repay the cost of the hotel nights, calling on the government "to do its work in a state of transparency and open an investigation."

Shifting the balance between good fat and bad fat

Monday, January 7, 2013

In many cases, obesity is caused by more than just overeating and a lack of exercise. Something in the body goes haywire, causing it to store more fat and burn less energy. But what is it? Researchers at Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute have a new theory?a protein called p62. According to a study the team published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, when p62 is missing in fat tissue, the body's metabolic balance shifts?inhibiting "good" brown fat, while favoring "bad" white fat. These findings indicate that p62 might make a promising target for new therapies aimed at curbing obesity.

"Without p62 you're making lots of fat but not burning energy, and the body thinks it needs to store energy," said Jorge Moscat, Ph.D., Sanford-Burnham professor. "It's a double whammy." Moscat led the study with collaborators at Helmholtz Zentrum M?nchen in Germany and the University of Cincinnati.

p62 and obesity

Moscat's team had previously produced mice that completely lack the p62 protein everywhere in their bodies. As a result, the animals were obese. They also had metabolic syndrome. In other words, as compared to mice with p62, mice lacking p62 weighed more, expended less energy, had diabetes and had a hyper-inflammatory response that's characteristic of obesity.

While those results showed that the lack of p62 leads to obesity, "we didn't know which tissue was responsible for these effects, because p62 was missing in all of them," Moscat said.

Some researchers believe that muscle tissue, where energy is expended, controls obesity. Others suspect the liver is a key player, or that the brain's appetite control center is most responsible for obesity.

But then there's fat itself?both white fat and brown fat. White fat is the type we think of as unwanted body fat. Brown fat, on the other hand, is beneficial because it burns calories. Many researchers now believe that brown fat somehow malfunctions in obesity, but the details are unclear.

p62 shifts the balance between white fat and brown fat

In their latest study, Moscat and colleagues set out to pinpoint the specific tissue responsible for obesity when p62 is missing. They made several different mouse models, each missing p62 in just one specific organ system, such as the central nervous system, the liver, or muscle. In every case, the mice were normal. They weren't obese like the mice lacking p62 everywhere.

Then they made a mouse model lacking p62 only in their fat tissue. These mice were obese, just like the mice missing p62 in all tissues. Upon further study, the researchers found that p62 blocks the action of an enzyme called ERK while activating another enzyme called p38. When p62 is missing, the enzyme p38 is less active in brown fat, while ERK is more active in white fat. As a result, Moscat said, p62 is "a master regulator" in normal fat metabolism.

According to Moscat, the discovery of p62's role in brown fat tissue is encouraging, because fat tissue is much more accessible than other parts of the body?the brain, for example?for potential drug therapies. "This makes it easier to think about new strategies to control obesity," he said.

New methods for preventing or treating obesity, a major epidemic in the United States, are urgently needed. Drug therapies designed to minimize the intake of food have had limited success and also produce considerable side effects.

Why is Straight Talk In Relationships So Damn Hard?

Why can?t we talk to each other more easily, or better yet ? more effectively? Why do couples struggle with addressing their most basic needs and feelings? Why is being understood ? and understanding ? so damn difficult?

In a recent discussion with an old friend, also divorced, we wandered onto the subject of marriage. Naturally, the conversation came around to communication ? as both cause and symptom of marital problems.

Well, you say, this is hardly news.

True enough.

But why do we start out so well, then fail to connect in this most basic way? Are we kidding ourselves in the beginning? Are we more critical or careless as time goes on?

Are we afraid of being judged? Too tired to speak our minds? As we build history together, does communication drama reflect a complex muddle of factors?

What if we lack fundamental skills that we don?t notice until it?s almost too late to do something about it?

Who hasn?t fallen into unhelpful habits? Oh, you know the ones: assumptions over questions; sullen silence replacing straight talk; avoiding tough topics because conflict is hard. So we find ourselves smiling (because it?s simpler), grunting (because it?s expedient), nodding and dashing out the door (because we can), or turning to passive-aggressive behaviors as frustrations build and we act up rather than speaking out?

Cross-Talk? Men, Women, Communication Styles

Communication challenges aren?t solely the domain of male-female relationships. We have difficulty getting through to our parents. We struggle to process the intentions of our children. Friends erect self-protective barriers and refuse to share what?s troubling them, or to accept constructive criticism.

But there?s little question that men and women communicate differently. If we don?t pay attention, we may misread the insignificant or miss the obvious.

And let?s face it, this screws up our relationships.

Some time back, I referenced this 2010 article in Psychology Today on communication, providing expert input to what I had observed.

Most men have a hard time communicating anything that remotely resembles an emotion. Why? Because emotions are scary to men, who think much more than they feel? It is interesting to note that women think and feel at the same time, while men can only think or feel.

If we accept that this is true more often than not, can we change the way we speak to each other ? and listen ? to do a better job of communicating?

Marriage Basics: Communication

As I read online, certainly anything to do with marriage or divorce, the topic of communication is raised on a regular basis. If you scan comments on any of these articles (Huff Post comes to mind), beneath the anger or pain you may wonder (as I do) what might have been different if the couples concerned had been able to speak plainly and listen effectively.

But is anything between two people really that simple? Still, how many of us can look back at almost any relationship that fizzled or exploded, and see that straight talk and careful listening might have bypassed huge problems? If not that, could clear communication have expedited an ending, and spared some pain?

About.com?s Marriage 101 has this to offer, when it comes to wedded bliss ? and its premature termination.

Lack of communication is a primary reason marriages fail.

What follows in their series of related articles is a variety of communication tips, including sample dialog to assist. That alone might help us embrace ?plain talk? in ways that are not hurtful. There are also listening tips, suggestions on compromise (certainly important), how to deal with conflict, and recommendations like ?talk with each other, not at each other.?

All helpful. But what about a different perspective? More skill and less psychology?

How to Communicate Effectively

As a marketing writer, before I craft any communication, I identify the goals, audience, and appropriate tone for effectively reaching my reader or listener.

Do we consider these same factors when dealing with the people in our lives? Could relationships be improved by applying ?think before you speak? and a few tips on clear messaging?

Care for specifics when dealing face-to-face?

Our arsenal, from the speaker?s viewpoint:

  • Choice of words
  • Tone and body language
  • Awareness of our underlying emotions (frustration, insecurity, resentment)
  • Awareness of our agendas (persuade, inform, unnerve, ?win?)
  • Knowledge of the receiver?s emotions, triggers, agendas, etc.

Similarly, stepping into the listener?s viewpoint, consider:

  • Potential openness or resistance to the message
  • Trigger words / sensitivities
  • Reading reception (words and body language)
  • Underlying emotions (as above)
  • Experience with this individual
  • Experience in similar situations

Communication is not static. As we ?read? the response, we can adjust tone and message accordingly. As we?re speaking plainly, we also need to be prepared to listen ? really listen ? to the response.

Emotion and History

In the Real World of Relationships, it?s not so simple. Time is tight and the pressures are many. Loose lips may not sink ships, but they can severely damage an otherwise good relationships. Cruelty can sear, and a good word can uplift.

I?m also not so naive as to dismiss our histories. If we?ve lived through betrayals or abuse, we tend to protect our innermost feelings.

I know myself to be as guilty as anyone when it comes to dancing around difficult subjects (fear of being judged; dislike of confrontation). I was also raised in the mode of people pleasing (reinforced by living with a narcissistic parent), and insecurities led me to stay silent in ways that impacted my relationships, including my marriage.

For me, critical listening and reading body language is easier than speaking my mind. But over the years I?ve learned to speak more plainly. Kindly I hope ? but plainly nonetheless.

I?m willing to confront issues though it?s still a challenge. So I take my time in considering the what, how and when, I choose my words carefully, and try to anticipate the possible responses. I also return to my objective ? what I want out of the discussion. It may be nothing more than a sympathetic ear, or the conversation may involve constructive criticism, explanation of a behavior or situation, or a request for help in solving a problem.

And I remind myself: Never assume.

Your Communication Tips?

Communication can be damaging in its absence, and even more so if wielded as a weapon. But when effective and respectful ? it?s powerfully connective. Why is straight talk in a relationship so damn hard?

Maybe we need to practice. Maybe we need to learn from the past. It doesn?t hurt if we get lucky ? finding a communicator who can encourage us to do the same.

At present, I?m in enjoying a relationship in which a Good Man is a Plain Talker and a Great Listener. He is articulate, open, and non-judgmental. When I ask for an honest opinion, I get it ? kindly. I would hope he can say the same for me, as it takes two for communication to work, and two to believe that it?s of the utmost importance.

  • How good are you at straight talk and real listening to your relationships?
  • Should we be auditing our own speaking and listening skills, and checking in with our partners on how we?re doing?
  • Your tips for improving communications with your spouse or partner?

Four dead in townhouse shooting in Aurora, Colorado

AURORA, Colo. (Reuters) - A gunman who barricaded himself inside a townhouse after killing three people in the home was shot to death by police on Saturday in Aurora, Colorado, the same Denver suburb where 12 people were slain in a movie house massacre last July, police said.

The gunman and his three victims, as well as a woman who fled safely from the home at the outset of the violence and alerted authorities, were all believed to be related to one another, police spokeswoman Cassidee Carlson said.

But the motive for the killings was not immediately understood.

"We're trying to find out what set this guy off," she told Reuters.

A hostage-negotiation team called to the scene had sought to talk the suspect into surrendering for about five hours before police moved to shoot tear gas into the home at about 8:00 a.m. (10:00 a.m. EST/1500 GMT), prompting the gunman to open fire on officers from inside, police said.

About an hour later, the gunman began firing at police again from a second-floor window, and police returned fire, killing the suspect, according to a police statement following the incident. No police were wounded.

Officers entering the townhouse found the bodies of the gunman and three other people - two men and a woman - who were presumed to have been shot hours earlier before police were called to the scene.

"None of the officers heard gunshots until they were directed at us at about 8 o'clock," Carlson said. The woman who escaped the home also told police the victims were shot before she fled.

The names of the gunman and his three victims were being withheld until the coroner could confirm their identities and notify next of kin, authorities said.

The episode kept residents in much of the surrounding community awake overnight, as police notified neighbors of an emergency situation and evacuated several adjacent blocks.

One neighbor, Sunil Pawar, 59, said he received a reverse 911 call advising him to stay inside and away from windows before police later showed up to ring doorbells and escort residents of the townhouse development to safety.

Pawar said he opted to stay put, later hearing gunshots, followed by the voices of police calling to the gunman though a bullhorn, saying, "Sonny, we want to talk to you, pick up the phone, Sonny."

Another neighbor, Michael Ignace, 46, said he had previously spoken with the man suspected of the shooting, and "he seemed like a reasonable guy, and we talked about motorcycles."

The standoff and shooting unfolded just a few miles south of the Aurora movie theater where 12 people were killed and 58 others wounded when a lone gunman opened fire there in July during a midnight showing of the Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises."

The suspect in that rampage, former college student James Holmes, is due back in court on Monday for a hearing in which prosecutors will seek to convince a judge they have sufficient evidence to put him on trial.

The Colorado movie theater killings had ranked as deadliest mass shooting in the United States last year until a December 14 massacre at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, where a gunman shot 20 school children and six adults to death before taking his own life. The shooter in that case also had killed his mother at their home.
