lines and colors :: a blog about drawing, painting, illustration, comics ...

Alex Ross at Norman Rockwell Museum
Alex Ross, who I profiled briefly in 2005, is an American comics artist and illustrator known for his work in the ?fully painted? style of comics art.

Ross has been one of the foremost proponents of this style, in which the traditional outline and color approach associated with comics is replaced by fully rendered, painted illustrations, without outlines.

There has been some controversy over this approach (which, as far as I can determine, was first practiced by Will Elder in his work with Harvery Kurtzman on Little Annie Fanny in Playboy in the 1960?s). Some critics contend that it is ?not comics?, or somehow inappropriate for a storytelling medium. Others, myself included, feel it works just fine, particularly in the hands of someone as accomplished as Ross, and adds to the range and variety of comics storytelling styles.

Ross also is known for his comics covers ? dramatic, forceful, and like his comics pages, beautifully realized in water media.

The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA, opens an exhibition tomorrow: Heroes and Villains: The Comic Book Art of Alex Ross, that will be on display through February 24, 2013.

The exhibition has a dedicated mini-site, with detailed information about the show, a bio of the artist and a gallery of selected works. (Kudos for the management and staff of the Norman Rockwell Museum for understanding how to use their website to promote and generate interest in an exhibition! Other small and medium sized museums should take note.)

The exhibition itself was organized by the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.

Like a number of contemporary comics artists, particularly those who work in a painted style (e.g. Steve Rude), Alex Ross proudly wears his admiration for a number of great American illustrators on his sleeve. The Rockwell Museum has drawn on its collection of American illustration to display work by artists who have been particularly influential on Ross as part of the exhibition, including Norman Rockwell, Andrew Loomis and J.C. Leyendecker.

The website points out examples in particular of Rockwell?s work, such as United Nations, that have inspired Ross in the creation of his signature tableaux of heroes, and/or villains, like those above.

The NRM museum store is also featuring relevant prints by Rockwell and books by Loomis, along with books that feature Alex Ross.

You can find more work by Alex Ross on the artist?s own website.

Price of New Cancer Drug Cut in Half: Zaltrap Discounted 50 ...

By Curt Pesman and Mary Miller

In an unusual move, Sanofi?pharmaceutical company has instituted a 50 percent discount, effective immediately, on its latest cancer drug Zaltrap. ?The reason for the sharp price drop, company officials said, was ?market resistance? to the initial price.

Zaltrap was approved in August by the FDA for second-line treatment for metastatic colorectal cancer.

One possible result of the price cut is that the new drug may become more widely available. However, due to complex pricing and regulation issues, it?s not yet known how the actual cost to patients will change over the next several months. Fight Colorectal Cancer is gathering more information today on this issue from oncologists and company officials.

The FDA approved Zaltrap?(zev-aflibercept) less than 3 months ago for treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer which had progressed despite other regimens of chemotherapy.

But in an unusual twist to a cancer/patient drug story, three doctors from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center wrote a letter to The New York Times, explaining why the famed hospital decided not to include Zaltrap among its formulary of colon cancer medicines. In short, they said, the price, set higher than other reportedly equivalent drugs, was too steep. This Op-Ed letter was viewed as one strong signal by many in the cancer care community that prices for certain drugs may not be sustainable in many instances.

As reported by The Cancer Letter newsletter and then The New York Times on Nov. 8, the drug manufacturer, Sanofi, reviewed its pricing policy and based on ?market resistance,? decided to offer an immediate 50 percent discount.

However, patients may not see an immediate cost savings themselves, because of the complexities of how Medicare (and other insurers) set and adjust reimbursement rates. ?

Like most cancer drugs given intravenously, patients don?t buy Zaltrap directly; they pay doctors or hospitals which buy the drug and get reimbursed by Medicare or other insurers. Medicare?s reimbursement rate for new drugs is based on the initial set price at least for several months until an ?average sales price? is established. But this type of quick, dramatic price reduction might demand a change in reimbursement rules.

Stay tuned. Fight Colorectal Cancer will follow this issue closely.

Meanwhile, clinical studies are underway?to better define which specific patients might do better with Zaltrap or other drug combinations.

And while the steep cost of most new cancer drugs is a pressing issue?for patients and others who pay for the drugs?one fact remains: There were only two drugs (5FU?and leucovorin) to treat colorectal cancer until just the past 10-15 years. Now there are more drugs, plus newer targeted therapies providing many choices and combinations of FDA-approved medicines. People are being cured, or living longer even with advanced colorectal cancer

Butler returns INT for score, Colts lead Jags 24-3

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Darius Butler intercepted Jacksonville's Blaine Gabbert and returned it 11 yards for a touchdown as the Indianapolis Colts increased their lead to 24-3 over the Jacksonville Jaguars at the end of the third quarter Thursday night.

It was the second big defensive play of the game for the cornerback, who recovered a fumble in the second quarter that led to a score.

The Jaguars, who struggled offensively all game, seemed to finally be making some traction on their ensuing drive thanks to a 52-yard pass to Cecil Shorts that put them inside the Colts 30. But a sack and holding penalty on consecutive plays led to a punt.

Colts rookie quarterback Andrew Luck ran for two touchdowns and Adam Vinatieri added a field goal in the first half.

Luck was surgical in the opening half, keeping drives alive with several long passes.

He scored on a close 4th-and-goal sneak for his second touchdown, prompting Jacksonville coach Mike Mularkey to throw his play sheet as he ran onto the field arguing for a review.

He was assessed a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and told the play was reviewed and the ruling on the field confirmed.

That seven-play, 61-yard drive was set up by the Colts winning a challenge on a fumble by Laurent Robinson.

It was a microcosm of another abysmal half for the Jags in recent weeks.

Aside from the coaching staff losing two key challenges, Gabbert also had several passes dropped, and there was a costly false start penalty late in the half inside the red zone that caused the Jags to settle for a field goal as the offense struggled.

The Jaguars went three-and-out on their first two drives of the game, before using a few long passes and a scramble by Gabbert to get inside the Colts 30.

The drive stalled, though, and kicker Josh Scobee missed a 44-yard field goal attempt wide right. It would have given him a franchise-record 21 straight makes.

Jacksonville appeared to intercept Luck on the first play of the ensuing Colts series, but the interception was nullified by a roughing the passer penalty on defensive tackle Terrance Knighton.

The Jags' defense did intercept Luck late in the half, but otherwise put little pressure on him.

Indianapolis was without six starters, including both of its starting cornerbacks, two offensive linemen, their starting tight end and All-Pro defensive end Robert Mathis.

Still, they entered the night riding a three-game winning streak, including close wins in consecutive games engineered by the rookie Luck.

It was the sixth game the Colts played without coach Chuck Pagano, whose leukemia diagnosis in October has definitely inspired his team.

Playing in his first prime time game, Luck was one the most recent players to shave his head in his coach's honor, joining more than three dozen others.

The Jaguars came into the matchup hoping to continue their three-game win streak in the series.

Jacksonville had the advantage of home teams boasting a 6-2 mark in Thursday night games this season, after going 7-2 in those prime time games in 2011.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said before the game that fact hasn't been lost on him.

"We had some discussion about that this week. We're looking at that," he said. "One of the things I want to try and do is get the analysis on how teams are performing outside of the Thursday games. We've got to be careful of making decisions quick without the data. We've got to analyze that."

Home teams are 29-14 all-time.

"Yes, but that's not what I'm interested in," Goodell said. "What I'm saying is how are they doing outside of that? In other words, those teams may have a higher percentage of winning anyhow. So, you just have to look at that."

It was the Jaguars annual "Salute to Service" Military Appreciation Game.
